South Africa Wound Treatment Market Using Cellular Tissue and Products

South Africa wound treatment market using cellular tissue and products encompasses a range of therapies and treatments involving bioengineered tissues and cells designed to promote wound healing. This market includes advanced wound care products such as skin substitutes, growth factors, and other cellular-based therapies.

As of 2024, the South Africa wound treatment market using cellular tissue and products is valued at approximately USD 150 million. The market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.5% from 2024 to 2030, reaching a forecasted value of USD 245 million by 2030.

Wound Healing Association of Southern Africa (WHASA) has published and revised its classification of wound dressings on a regular basis since its inception, due to the addition of new dressings in the South African market.
Proliferation of COVID-19 had a significant impact on medical practices in South Africa, resulting in a decrease in essential medical care and thereby influencing South Africa's wound care management industry. For example, an article published in the journal Dove Press in October 2022 reported that government restrictions in South-Western Uganda during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the restriction of certain hospital services, which contributed to the delay in wound healing services in hospitals, causing complications for people living with diabetic foot ulcers.

Studied market is predicted to develop significantly throughout the forecast period due to increased demand for faster wound recovery, the rising incidence of chronic wounds, and an increase in the number of operations. However, the high cost of operations and a lack of adequate reimbursements may stymie the expansion of the studied industry.

Market Overview
South Africa wound treatment market using cellular tissue and products is characterized by a growing demand for advanced wound care solutions driven by an increasing prevalence of chronic wounds, diabetic ulcers, and other conditions requiring specialized treatment. The market is supported by advancements in biotechnology and a rising awareness of the benefits of cellular-based therapies.

Chronic wounds, defined as those that do not heal in a predictable order or do not heal within three months, represent a huge strain on the healthcare system. Diabetes, obesity, and an aging population are all known risk factors for long-term care institutions. Cellular and tissue-based products (CTPs) have various advantages over autologous skin grafts for enhancing the healing rate of chronic wounds in patients, such as diabetic ulcers, venous ulcers, and pressure ulcers. This post will look at the various types of CTPs and their possible benefits. It should be noted that it is a research product and is not intended to be used as clinical literature.

Market Dynamics

Drivers

  • Rising Incidence of Chronic Wounds: An increasing number of patients with diabetes, obesity, and other chronic conditions contribute to a higher incidence of chronic wounds, driving the demand for advanced wound care products.
  • Advancements in Biotechnology: Innovations in bioengineering and regenerative medicine have led to the development of effective cellular tissue products, enhancing the market's growth prospects.
Growing Healthcare Expenditure: Increased investment in healthcare infrastructure and services in South Africa supports the adoption of advanced wound treatment options.

Restraints

  • High Treatment Costs: The cost of cellular-based wound treatments can be prohibitive for many patients, limiting market growth.
  • Regulatory Challenges: Stringent regulatory requirements and lengthy approval processes can delay the introduction of new products to the market.

Challenges

  • Limited Awareness and Accessibility: In some regions, awareness of advanced wound care solutions remains low, and access to these treatments is limited.
  • Economic Constraints: Economic instability and healthcare budget constraints can impact the affordability and availability of advanced wound care products.

Opportunities

  • Technological Innovations: Continued research and development in cellular therapy and tissue engineering present significant opportunities for market expansion.
Collaborations and Partnerships: Strategic partnerships between local and international companies can enhance product availability and market reach.

  • What are Cellular and Tissue Based Products?
Despite providing adequate coverage for full-thickness wounds such as surgical and chronic wounds, autologous skin grafts are frequently in low supply, need painful and invasive procedures, may result in considerable scarring at the donor site, and transplant rejection is common. Cellular and tissue-based products reduce pain and healing time, offer wide and long-lasting wound covering, and are less obtrusive. Engineered skin substitutes act as biological scaffolding, replicating the structure and functions of organic skin.

Cellular and tissue-based products: types and derivatives
There are numerous varieties of CTPs on the market today. However, they can be divided into the following categories:

  • Human Skin Allograft
Human skin allografts are made up of bioengineered skin components and tissues that are resistant to transplant rejection. They are widely employed in the treatment of burn injuries and in the management of chronic wounds, where they promote scaffolding, growth factors, and soft tissue support while causing rare immune reactions.

  • Allogeneic matrix.
Allogeneic matrices are CTPs produced from newborn dermal fibroblasts grown in vitro. The most common sources are the placenta, umbilical cord, amnion, and chorion. They can help with soft tissue support and re-epithelialization of full-thickness wounds.
  •

Composite Matrix
Composite matrices are derived from human keratin-producing skin cells and fibroblasts. These CTPs contain active cellular chemicals that produce proteins, as well as bioactive substances that promote wound healing and re-epithelialization.

  • Acellular Dermal Matrix.

Acellular dermal matrices (ADMs) are the most common type of CTP. They are made from collagen, cellular remains, or membranes and closely resemble the properties of regular, healthy skin. ADMs promote wound healing by localizing and increasing hormonal or enzymatic activity, such as angiogenesis, growth factors, and fibroblast proliferation. The standard is the paste-type ADM (CG Paste).
