Definition

Management of poultry health In order for a program to be effective, its main goals must be to stop diseases or parasites from spreading, identify diseases or parasite infestations early on, and treat any flocks that are afflicted with either of these conditions as soon as possible, before they become serious, or before they infect other flocks. In order to accomplish this, one must be able to identify diseased birds, know what steps to take to avoid or minimize illness, and be able to spot indicators that the prevention program is having an effect. Poultry are a major source of valuable high-quality protein for much of the world's population, so food security is heavily dependent on maintaining poultry health. They are also increasingly important as specialist hobby animals in back-yard flocks. Despite this, veterinarians specializing in the care and health of these important domestic animals are few and far between, and many vets in small animal practice have little real experience of poultry health management and disease.

Real-time visibility into a variety of aspects, including the circumstances within the poultry house, bird performance, health, and welfare, is made possible via remote sensing. Not only can the farmer monitor the condition of the sheds and birds whenever they choose to check the computer, but more significantly, the data from these sensors can be programmed to send management "alerts" in the event that any parameter deviates from the established guidelines for the particular age of birds on a round-the-clock basis.
